Proud to say I am a third generation rower, follow

Proud to say I am a third generation rower, following in the footsteps of my grandpa and dad. My grandpa was 94 when he competed in the Crash B’s, the indoor world rowing Championships in Boston. I coached him over the finish line, his mouth frothing, a smile the whole way (or was that a grimace?) and he became a “World Champ” that day because of it… at his age, he was the only “cat in the category!” He was a classic New England guy, martinis almost every night (except before race day) and stubborn. My dad was the one who pushed me to try rowing, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Hopefully I can beat my Pop-Pop’s world record someday! #dad #crashbs #indoorrowing

Sunday is often a strong family day for us - but right now it’s pretty much every day. When I think of what has pushed me harder - being and athlete, or a husband and father - I can’t quite decide which one takes more focus, hard work and effort. I do know one thing...these smiles are my favorite part of any day. My team is everything!

My meditation often comes from the cold and the breath. Horse Stance is part of that practice - this was post soak in the Bay of Fundy last summer (still chilly in August!). The other shot was breath work at altitude. Craving the bracing cold of New England air and water right now, not only because of what we are facing in California, but because doing my own practice helps me focus on how I can help - wherever I’m called to give that day. #commit #practice #serve #cravethecold

Found this shot too. Reminds me that I can take on tough moments in life. Anyone who crosses an Ironman finish-line has a story to tell. It’s a tough race. Mine was that I got hit by a car and busted my hand eight weeks before Ironman Lake Placid (my first and only shot to qualify for the Kona, Ironman World Championships). And I was just a few weeks away from having my first kid. After hand surgery, when I couldn’t really train, I’d ride a stationary bike one-handed on my porch, sweating around my cast – had to suspend it from the beam above to keep the blood from throbbing... still in so much pain.
Reaching lifelong goals, and even daily ones, doesn’t always come with ideal conditions or with perfect timing. In this case my daughter was two months old when I finally finished Kona... #nosleep #ironman #kona #triathlon #endurance

Chatting with these guys a lot right now - so much history. My Brown University crew taught me about teamwork, about friendship, and pulling - even when you think you can’t. We won Henley Royal Regatta together, crossed dozens of finish lines, and were inducted into the Brown Hall of Fame 20 yrs later. I never could have imagined when my dad told me to “just give rowing a try for a couple weeks” that I would end up becoming a world champion, lifelong rower and, with these guys, brothers to this day. Incredible to think about how a small decision can define your life. #brownhalloffame #support #gratitude
